Scott Frish joined the Sybil B. Harrington College of Fine Arts and Humanities of West Texas A&M University in 2003. He received a B.F.A. degree in two-dimensional art from the University of Arizona in 1988 and a M.F.A. degree in printmaking from the University of Washington in 1991.
He is currently teaching printmaking, computer art and fine art foundations. He has participated in more than 60 regional, national and international exhibitions in the last 15 years, most notably, an exhibition at the famed “Fondazione Il Bisonte” in Florence Italy in the fall of 2013. Previous to joining the faculty at WTAMU, he worked as an associate printer at Stone Press Editions Inc. in Seattle, and as an Adjunct Professor at Seattle University.
Frish’s work has focused on the integration of digital technologies into traditional print mediums including lithography, intaglio and serigraphy. Most of his work involves capturing multiple layers of digital and physical imagery. He uses hand balanced transparency film as a positive image and exposed it to multiple plates or screens. Then the print matrix is applied to the different surfaces, using a hand mixed ink consisting of traditional materials and in some cases an added binder.
“Over the last few years I have noticed a greater emphasis on the physical qualities of my prints. I would narrow this idea down to their ‘objective quality,’ a combination of both the print as a physical object, and the subject matter representing an object. In my view, these efforts create a singular aesthetic that leads the viewer to a more visceral or tactile experience. My objective is to remind the viewer that thoughts or ideas are in their acceptance, more and more real or tangible. An example would be how memory can be perceived in different ways, like blurry or sharp.”
The serigraph entitled; Into the Flow, is a metaphor for the way Hyde sees his thought process. The marks on the surface are made to make an impression on the viewer, as each stone in the river is subject to the power of the flowing water.
