David Villegas is an artist who lives and works in the DFW area. Villegas received an MFA in Printmaking from the University of North Texas in 2017. He currently exhibits work in Dallas and has exhibited work nationally. While he is not making art, David spends his time teaching Art Appreciation, Drawing, and Printmaking across the DFW area.
As a Texas native, his work draws inspiration from the visual and cultural environment that surrounded him growing up in West Texas. Born in El Paso, TX and growing up in Amarillo, TX exposed Villegas to a mix of Western, Native, and Mexican cultures. Direct casts of objects, such as ranch-worn hats or shirts, are made using materials such as Red West Texas dirt or ground cow bone. Thus, the works contain a direct lineage back to the original owner and to the West Texas region itself. These same objects, along with appropriated imagery, are also used to make prints that reflect the marriage of ideas that make up West Texas. Ultimately, through the use of prints and objects, the viewer is offered a chance to learn a little bit about the artist, and a glimpse into what has shaped him and continues to motivate him.
