“When discussing my artwork, I at times find it difficult to define why I create what I create. Generally my work is put into several categories such as that of a western painter, or a southwest artist, and more recently, a folk or cultural artist. I tend to side with the prospect of a cultural artist, or maybe more of an interpreter, because culture, specifically my own is what fuels my ideas and what most of my observations are based upon. In a nutshell, it is my intention to re-invent or re-interpret the Western Stereotype or Ideal…” B.C. Gilbert was born and raised on the High Plains of the Texas Panhandle, also known as the Llano Estacado, or Staked Plains. He currently lives in Wichita Falls, TX.Jeff Wheeler SLATON / SPLENDORA
Jeffrey Wheeler, pioneer and mentor artist of Lubbock, announced this last spring that he’d be picking up sticks to head elsewhere in Texas. Jeff Wheeler will take on the title of Co-Director of the legendary studio compound owned by James Surls and Charmaine Locke in Splendora (about an hour northeast of Houston), called Splendora Gardens, and he’ll run it alongside their daughter Ruby. They will revive “…the studio as an art and music destination with plans for workshops, lectures, and eventually artist residencies, and a collecting museum.” Jeff and his brother Brian launched the 14th installment under their collaborative, ongoing (and traveling) Ulterior Motifs series of group shows (which began in 1999 and feature Texas artists),Kathy Kelley LUBBOCK / HUNTSVILLE / HOUSTON

In a recent interview with Paul of KTTZ’s 24 Frames, Whitfill refers to his patent books as “beefy,” “amazing objects,” and “just too precious.” And he (with the help of friends) has given away and shipped (even internationally) some of these 980 beefy amazing things to over 130 artists of his choosing, on the condition that they’d give something back– a new, original work inspired by the individual volume they recieved. This enterprise culminated in the recent exhibition Patent Pending at the 5 & J Gallery in downtown Lubbock, which opened in conjunction with the city’s July First Friday Art Trail. Jonathan was also selected by the Texas Tech University System Public Art Program to construct and install an outdoor sculpture in front of the Art 3D Annex.Blair Willson PLAINVIEW / LUBBOCK

an ordinary artist in an extra-ordinary city full of great artists and art. He has an undergraduate degree from the University of Houston in Painting with a minor in Art History 1984. He has a Masters Degree from RiceUniversity in Liberal Studies 2012. He was a founding member of the Rubber Group, along with Bill Hailey and Ramzy Telley in 1996 until 2004. Gilbert's discipline is designed to investigate and question the academic substance of art as it integrates into the theory and critical analysis of art making. What is art? Why does it matter? Who defines a work of art? What is it about this peculiar and mystifying human undertaking that can result in such a huge world wide industry and sometimes be relegated to the lofty world of “priceless”? The range of imagery is wide and does not follow any specific lineage, but rather entertains the momentary flicker of a thought as it might relate to our philosophical, theological, physical or mental trip through this wonderful and fascinating eschatological journey. Wayne has been a guest speaker at BardCollege, Annandale on the Hudson, New York, Rutgers University, New Jersey, and Texas Tech, Lubbock, Texas. He has curated exhibitions, in Trujillo, Peru, Santiago, Cuba, Salwedel, Germany, Seattle ,Washington, Marfa, Texas, Arlington, Texas to name a few.
